What's the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) is a decimal unit equal to 1,000,000 bytes, based on powers of 1000. MiB (mebibyte) is a binary unit equal to 1,048,576 bytes, based on powers of 1024. Storage manufacturers use decimal units; operating systems often use binary units, which is why the two numbers don't match.
Why does my drive show less space than advertised?
A drive advertised as 1TB (1,000,000,000,000 bytes, decimal) shows as roughly 931GB in an operating system that reports capacity in binary GiB. No storage is missing — it's the same number of bytes measured with two different units.
How many bytes are in a bit?
One byte equals 8 bits, so one bit equals 0.125 bytes. Network and internet speeds are usually measured in bits, while file and storage sizes are measured in bytes.
