Why is my download speed in MB/s so much lower than the Mbps my ISP advertises?
ISPs advertise speed in megabits per second (Mbps), but download managers and browsers usually show megabytes per second (MB/s). Since 1 byte equals 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s, not 100 MB/s.
What's the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Mbps (lowercase b) means megabits per second and is used for network and internet speeds. MBps or MB/s (uppercase B) means megabytes per second and is used for file sizes and transfer rates. MBps is 8 times larger than Mbps for the same number.
Are these conversions decimal or binary?
Speed units here use decimal (SI) scaling — 1 Kbps = 1,000 bps, 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bps, and so on — which matches how ISPs and networking equipment report speed.
