How it works
Body Mass Index (BMI) estimates whether your weight is healthy for your height, using the formula weight ÷ height² (metric) or 703 × weight ÷ height² (imperial). The result places you into one of four standard categories — underweight, normal, overweight, or obese — and also shows the weight range that would put you in the "normal" category at your current height. BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis: it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. This tool is for general information only and is not medical advice.

FAQ
What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classified as "normal" by the WHO’s standard categories, which this calculator uses.
Is BMI accurate for athletes or very muscular people?
Not always — BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes and very muscular people can show a higher BMI despite having a healthy body composition.
Does BMI differ by age or sex?
This calculator uses the standard adult BMI formula and categories, which apply the same thresholds regardless of age or sex. Children and teens use different, age-specific percentile charts.
